In the last thirty years we have seen massive upheavals in social structures across the globe: the collapse of major industries, the rise and fall of ideologies and governments, the shifts of economic power, and changes to the way we live that were unimaginable thirty years ago.
Change is a constant. Yet communities still struggle to come to terms with the loss of their primary industries and identities: fishing ports with no boats, mining towns with no mines, and market towns with no market.
When our place of work is now a heritage site, how can we reinvent where and how we live to be relevant and purposeful? How can placemaking help build strong, resilient communities? What sort of skills does a community need to adapt to change? How do we transfer skills to young people to enable them to take on new challenges and make the most of new opportunities?
The conference looks at future thinking, social and cultural capital, place-based learning, health, sustainability, inclusion and participation. International speakers and practical workshops will look at what communities can do now to thrive in the future.
